First post of 2010 – FINALLY!
Maybe if I try a weblog editor like MarsEdit, I may actually post more often. This still doesn’t have the flexibility of some of the plugins provide. Like embedded video. And I have not tried to upload and insert a picture. I currently do not use Flickr. For most of my text based post, this will definitely work as is.
Additionally, I am trying out layout changes once again. There are sidebar issues with the currently nightly of K2 that I’m using – r1044. I not sure about dueling sidebars or 2 on the right. A single sidebar just doesn’t work for all the stuff I want to display. Time will tell.
Checking to see if this post appears ok.
Typing on the virtual keyboard is a bit time consuming. Twitter is the only app that works for this type of posting. Keep it short and specfic.
I am still using the K2 theme, now revision r791 with the current version of WordPress 2.7.1. I still need to adapt to widgets vs K2’s SBM (sidebar manager). I liked K2’s SBM much better than widgets due to the ease of use, flexibility, and customizability. I will need to hunt down more plugins or widgets to get back what I miss, mainly Pages display control.
For as often as I post, does this matter? A little. Time for some experimentation.
My current blog set-up:
WordPress 2.7.1
theme K2 r764
Everything works great as expected. I stopped using the K2 Sidebar Manager (SBM), since it was being phased out. I prefer the SBM. The widgets manager does not give you enough options or settings for displaying individual widgets. Mainly, the lack of options with the Pages widget compared to the K2 SBM version.
There is supposed to be a K2 SBM to widget importer in the works. It will be interesting to see how they handle the reduced options.
Testing out blogging from iPod Touch. Only good for twitter like/style posts. Especially, since there is no copy & paste function. Typing is a bit slow using touch screen interface, but tolerable.
I would probably use twitter and display the feed in my sidebar if this becomes something I start using more often.
Final test using Flock. Very basic, too basic. Category list shows up after you select publish.
A quick post to test blogging from something besides the Wordpress admin dashboard.
Test from another choice – Blogo
So far, initially I like MarsEdit better since it shows my pre-exisiting categories. The editting sidebar is good but Blogo does not show previously used tags.
I found out how to add/edit catergories throuh trial and error. Easy and does supply a nice drop down menu.
I have been using the netflix 3.1 plugin by Albert Banks to display my Netflix@home movies in my sidebar. I had the plugin set to display an image with link. Last month a problem developed. The image displayed was wrong for the top 3 movies @home and the same image was displayed in all 3 slots. Initially the links were still pointed to the correct movie, but later changed to the displayed image. Screen shots below.

On my About page the image display for @home and in queue both showed the wrong movie duplicated in all 3 slots. The movie displayed was not in my queue or at home.

Later the above displayed titles reversed themselves. About 48 hours later the display was back to normal showing the correct titles with links.

This problem has happened twice that I know of. Not a big deal. But since I rent mainly TV series, the displayed image shown is a generic “image not available” from Netflix for almost all of the TV series selections. This defeats the purpose of having an imaged displayed, so I have changed to text w/link only.
Strange thing is I have a netflix app on my Facebook page that does correctly show all images for selected titles.
I recently updated to WordPress 2.5 using the most recent nightly version of the K2 theme. Everything went smooth as usual. I small glitch, when I select a theme version to use, I initially get a fatal error when reloading due to my last.fm plugin. I just refresh the page and everyrhing works great from then on.
The new look of WordPress 2.5 is very cool and has some welcomed refined touches/changes/advancements.
